Overview of our electric powertrain components

Electric Powertrain

Multiple challenges in the e-powertrain area - E-mobility is taking off, and with it the requirements and standards surrounding the construction of electric vehicles. Electric powertrains, in particular, are a highly complex system of multiple individual components, and can be a true challenge for many materials. Shaft grounding, for example, has to work in an oily environment and safely dissipate interference currents up to the 100 MHz range. In addition, they also need to be easy to integrate without having to make major structural changes to the engine.

Schunk technologies for enhanced performance and safety in electric drives

Thermal management and self-lubricating carbon components

Thermal management needs to function reliably, especially when charging and discharging batteries in electric vehicles. The only way to achieve long battery service life is to ensure top-notch thermal performance. In addition, thermal runaway protection concepts are essential - in an area where everything is constantly getting smaller, lighter and more powerful. Furthermore, components of the e-drivetrain, such as our bearings and reinforcing sleeves, need to be highly temperature and corrosion-resistant to aggressive media. However, we also aim to produce our products as precisely as possible, with optimized weight.

Soft magnetic components in the e-powertrain

Soft magnetic components also handle important functions in the electric powertrain. These components need to be suitable for manufacturing efficiently in large-scale series production, need to delivery high power and torque density, and take up as little space as possible. Schunk has the answer to all of these requirements – thanks to our many years of experience and extensive materials expertise.

Advantage

Innovative solutions for electric powertrains

  • Shaft grounding: reliable protection for electric engines against high-frequency, parasitic shaft voltage draws
  • Thermal management: customer-specific, lightweight materials that respond to thermal requirements
  • Mechanical carbon components with low weight, high precision, good tribological properties, and excellent temperature and corrosion resistance
  • Powder metallurgy as a standard process for stable, large-scale series production of soft magnetic components
  • The greater design freedom offered by isotropic material properties allows for more complex engine topologies, such as axial and transverse flow engines
